Laboratory Research Technician (Upper East Side)

A laboratory research technician is being sought to join the Department of Surgery at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. The focus of our laboratory is to study novel strategies for inhibiting tumor angiogenesis (new tumor blood vessel formation). The main areas of investigation are 1) to analyze the role of hypoxia-inducible factors (HIFs) and vascular endothelial growth factor A (VEGF-A) in sarcoma progression, metastasis, and radiation response and 2) to examine the use of targeted biological agents with radiation therapy for soft tissue sarcomas and gastroesophageal cancer. Candidates for the position should have an excellent academic record including an undergraduate degree from a highly ranked university. The job is ideal for those interested in subsequently applying to medical school or graduate school. The past 5 laboratory technicians to hold this position obtained their undergraduate degree from universities such as MIT and Harvard. After leaving the lab, two went to graduate school, two to medical school, and one to an MD/PhD program. Candidates must have a strong background or coursework in molecular and cellular biology and be comfortable with mouse experiments. A 2 year commitment is absolutely required. Candidates must also be able to work independently (with some PI-supervision), have excellent technical skills, and possess self-motivation, organizational skills, and enthusiasm.
